Lake James
Shortoff Mountain Retreat is a short drive to Lake James
The cabin is located within a short walk to some of the most beautiful hiking trails in North Carolina. The Wolf Pit trailhead is designated by the parking area on the map above. The hike to the Shortoff Mountain overlook is 2.2 miles from the front door of the cabin. The trail has an elevation gain of about 1000′, which adds to the difficulty of the hike. The trail is a very popular hiking location and the path is well-defined and maintained. On a warm, sunny day there might be 40-60 cars parked along Wolf Pit Rd.
Lake James is an expansive, deep water lake located at the base of Shortoff Mountain.
The public boat launch is located 3 miles the cabin.
The lake is great for sport fishing, motor boating, kayaking, and swimming.
Lake James State Park has beach access swimming, locker rooms, and parking for a low entrance fee.
